New Life Wickford and Belgium
In 2008, Lissie and I were enjoying a short break in Ieper in Belgium. Whilst relaxing in this beautiful town, we became aware of the lack of churches, other than those dedicated to the Catholic tradition. On returning to the UK, I investigated this further and discovered that Belgium was steeped in the Catholic tradition. Very few evangelical expressions of church seem to be available to the people of Belgium. Belgium is reachable from Wickford in about 3 hours, using the Channel tunnell. Lissie and I decided that we would like to take small teams into Belgium to serve the local evangelical church there. Our only problem, we did not have any contacts in Belgium or much time to invest in such an undertaking. Some friends of ours suggested that we contact Julian and Sarah Richards, who were and still are working with a radical expression of church in Brugge, headed up by Jan and Marlene Blondeel. In April 2009 we visited Jan and Marlene and had a great day of fellowship and sightseeing. (Praise the Lord for SatNav). Later, in August we visited their Sunday expression of church, which is geared totally to reaching out the not yet saved. The Sunday expression includes a motivational talk, wine, beer and coffee. The body building ministry takes place during the week In May, 2010, Lissie and I are taking out our first team for a long day in Belgium, visiting again with the church in Brugge. As Jan says, Christians in Belgium need to be encouraged as so much of the landscape is dominated by religoius tradition. If you have any Christian contacts in Belgium and feel happy with passing on these details, Lissie and I would appreciate you letting us know them. Our vision, is to regularly take or send out teams to help support and encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ within Belgium. It may not be as exciting as trips to Afica or other 2/3 World places, but the need is just as great. |
